MoBillionaire

One of the most influential people in music today is a man you’ve probably never heard of. Its not your fault if you haven’t, Mo B. has almost as many alias’ as he has artists under his wing, and he has successfully positioned himself as the Chicago Renaissance’s man behind-the-scenes. Mo. B aka Mo. Billionaire aka Mo. B Necessary aka Moses aka The Manifestor is an artist manager, brand manager, consultant, and co-founder of the management and production company, The Movement Worldwide, and its online component, Wedonotfollow. His talent roster includes: Shala, Hollywood Holt, Mic Terror, Ace Watkins, Low B, Million $ Mano, Skyler, and visual artists Seven Spoon, and Hebru Brantley. He was at ground zero with Low B and Diplo in Hollertronix when they gave the Indy-hipster kids their first taste of black urban party rocker beats mashed up with electro. He cut his teeth in talent management by signing Chicago’s own Qualo to Universal Records, and is considered by some to be the bedrock of the New Chicago movement.

The Brooklyn Circus‘ attention to detail and their fierce love of their brand, is what keeps me coming back. It had been a while since my last visit to their shop on Fillmore, and when I saw they had landed the coveted Pro-Keds account (only two other shops in the Bay Area carry them) I had to go see what else lay under the big top.

In an effort to foster relationships and create dialogues with the creative forces that inspire us, “We Are Each Other” is an on-going series that spotlights designers in various design disciplines. These in-depth interviews and essays showcase our belief that we are all extensions of a larger artistic community, inspiring and motivating each other to new heights of imagination and innovation.

Vaughn Fender and I have a very peculiar story: you see, we’ve never met, yet we’ve worked on a few things together here and there. Even funnier, while we share a good handful of mutual friends, in real life our paths have never crossed. I was first introduced to his brilliant illustration work when I was recruited by the Hartford School of Art. Vaughn was featured in their beautifully designed prospective students handbook. I would later find that he worked as a designer at Fathom, where I’d been interviewing as a prospective intern. Later Vaughn and I would connect to work on a mutual project concerning Kid Cudi. Despite our rich personal history, to this day Vaughn and I have still never met. I felt that We Are Each Other resonated deeply with Vaughn and I because we share so much in common and are able to collaborate so effortlessly, geographic and time/space constraints be damned.

The Key to Creativity

February 27th, 2009 by

“21,398 keys, 26 artist grants, one vision” – so begin the opening lines of the 823 Key Project site. The idea is brilliant in its simplicity, and inspiring in its goal. Sell a series of one-of-a-kind, vintage, handmade, skeleton-key necklaces for $75 each, and use the proceeds to create a grant fund that musicians and writers, painters and photographers, travelers and revelers can tap for their next project. Each key is one of a series of 823 denoted by letters of the alphabet (currently ‘a’). Each letter corresponds to a different fund.
