“21,398 keys, 26 artist grants, one vision” – so begin the opening lines of the 823 Key Project site. The idea is brilliant in its simplicity, and inspiring in its goal. Sell a series of one-of-a-kind, vintage, handmade, skeleton-key necklaces for $75 each, and use the proceeds to create a grant fund that musicians and writers, painters and photographers, travelers and revelers can tap for their next project. Each key is one of a series of 823 denoted by letters of the alphabet (currently ‘a’). Each letter corresponds to a different fund.
“It’s about uniting 823 people—and the work of one enterprising artist—through a common pulse, a thread that links the contribution and purchases of many to the creation of one vision.” The synergy of the 823KeyProject struck me – community members purchase a key to enable a member of the community to accomplish a dream, and to share it with other members of the community.
Avoiding cliches about the keys being a key to (like i did in the title, sorry)… I’ll simply say this type of thinking goes hand in hand with our philosophy “we are each other”.
My girlfriend and I have keys 98 and 78.
