Francis and the Lights, Live At Red Devil Lounge

January 26th, 2010 1 Comment

There must be something beautiful and dangerous happening inside the mind of Francis Farewell Starlite. Having experienced his live shows only through a few video clips here and there, I was ecstatic to hear that he would be gracing the stage at San Francisco’s Red Devil Lounge. Although I had no idea, [...]

Two of our favorite SF boutiques, HUF and The Brooklyn Circus SF, are having Black Friday sales it’d be criminal to miss. Both shops have been hard at work crafting new looks for 2010, and it shows in their respective lines. Go check out the fine new threads for yourself, and while you’re there, score [...]

Of Sneakerheads, Subcultures and Neon Orange Unicorns – The Retrospective’s Night With Nike iD

May 5th, 2009 6 Comments

Until recently I had never heard the term sneakerhead, nor to my knowledge had I met one. Over three hours with Harley Carrara, owner of Mass Appeal Skateboard Shop in Plainville, Connecticut, and three Nike Design Customization Experts at Westfarms Mall’s Nike iD Studio, I learned that though I hadn’t realized it, the mythic sneakerhead [...]

Cut Off Your Hands - Popscene, San Francisco, CA

March 10th, 2009 No Comments

A great record is like having a crush on a girl: the first date can make or break the affair. When I first heard the new LP, You and I, from Cut Off Your Hands, I got all pinkygoo, weak in the knees. Would this infatuation be fleeting, or would we be picking out curtains together at IKEA? With Noise [...]

The Brooklyn Circus SF x Pro-Keds

March 3rd, 2009 1 Comment

The Brooklyn Circus‘ attention to detail and their fierce love of their brand, is what keeps me coming back. It had been a while since my last visit to their shop on Fillmore, and when I saw they had landed the coveted Pro-Keds account (only two other shops in the Bay Area carry them) I [...]

The Key to Creativity

February 27th, 2009 1 Comment

“21,398 keys, 26 artist grants, one vision” - so begin the opening lines of the 823 Key Project site. The idea is brilliant in its simplicity, and inspiring in its goal. Sell a series of one-of-a-kind, vintage, handmade, skeleton-key necklaces, and use the proceeds to create a grant fund that musicians and writers, painters and photographers, travelers and revelers can tap for their next project.

RetroTalk | Thursday “..it’s not about fads and fashion phases”

February 26th, 2009 6 Comments

Notorious for putting their hearts and emotions on display for the world to interpret, Thursday hides very little from their audience. Over the years, Thursday has gained thousands of admirers, millions have watched them come into their own, and most importantly (to us, anyway) they’ve become our friends.

Weekends are for Amateurs

May 28th, 2008 No Comments

It’s Wednesday night, and while my Sociology final kept me from the M.I.A. concert, I know of a very very hot afterparty going on.  Wait, hot party on Wednesday?  Thanks to Rchrd Oh?!, Sleazemore, and the ever-so-lovely Parker Day, you had better fucking believe it.  The trio, who are also responsible for the hot and [...]

A Tropical Torment

May 8th, 2008 1 Comment

Take Buenos Aires and stick it in Oakland. You know, like what Shawn Reynaldo (aka Disco Shawn) and Gavin Burnett (aka ORO11) did after meeting on the Buenos Aires DJ circuit through mutual friends in late 2006. We should thank these guys for bringing cumbia to the Bay Area in a way that no one [...]
