Nooka Watches

I’m not sure when I first discovered Nooka, but they are a Life Style and Accessory design company headed by Mathew Waldman. They make really interesting design pieces working with different design systems. They are mostly known for their interesting take on time pieces, mainly watches. They redefine the standard analog or digital “interface” and focus mainly on a more intuitive and abstract visual illustration of time. My girl bought me the “Zoo MR” for my birthday and I was really impressed. They have so many different pieces that there is something for everyone and ultimately all the  pieces have a unique visual illustration. I’m definitely going to try and pick up a couple more pieces. I really like the philosophy behind the brand and they are planning on expanding their design ideas to different types of accessories. Check them out.

Putting Back the Music in MTV

MTVMUSIC logo

MTV is saying goodbye to the Hills? Well, not exactly. However the newly launched Mtvmusic puts the focus back on music. Really!

Viacom’s MTV Networks launched MTVmusic.com, a user-friendly online collection of 16,000 music videos including “Unplugged” performances. The site resembles Hulu but MTV has added a social networking component. A streaming online collection seems like a natural progression for MTV. But in the age of Youtube is MTVmusic too little, too late? Only time will tell.

For my 21st birthday, some friends and I trekked over to the House of Sweden located between the Foggy Bottom and Georgetown sections of Washington, DC. The reason was that indie pop performers Firefox AK and Hello Saferide were performing (a free show). The House of Sweden, which is sort of the cultural arm of the Swedish Embassy, is becoming quite the talk of Washington due in part to the various cultural exhibitions that are displayed and take place there.

Goodby, Silverstein & Partners – Stick it to McCain

Goodby, Silverstein & Partners resides virtually in my back yard and I’ve been meaning to write about them for a bit now. As one of the top independent ad shops in the country, they are responsible for excellent work they produce for clients such as Adobe, Comcast, and Hyundai. The two principles, Jeff Goodby and Rich Silverstein, personally funded a series of ads scrutinizing the McCain/Palin camp and put them on YouTube. One word ladies and gentleman- brilliant! I’m not a political scientist, I’m just a young guy living in one messed up time.  Most of the creative world has rallied against the insanity that is the McCain campaign and everything it stands for. This is hopefully another nail in the coffin for McCain/Palin run.

Hey Champ – Cold Dust Girl

Chicago has the fever! Every time I turn around something else delectable comes out of the Windy City. I could use words like airy, atmospheric and sultry to describe the smooth tunes from electro pop artists Hey Champ. I caught wind of them while sifting through my bulletins on Myspace (Tom please make this thing suck less okthnxbye!). Hey Champ cites influences like “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego”, 80’s cartoons, and art history for their infectious tracks. Cold Dust Girl is no exception and the video’s use of slow motion is well executed.

Update: As of October 15th Hey Champ has just signed with 1st & 15th
