Being an active member of the streetwear community and a sneaker enthusiast for around 6 years has taught me a few things: one, how to survive for a few days sitting outside of a store on a crowded, freezing New York City street; two, how to haggle with other sneakerheads over the price of a pair of size 12 De La Soul Hi’s; and perhaps most importantly, three, how to accept sneakers as not just footwear, but art.

A few years back my brother Yanick introduced me to a film that gave me a glimpse into a movement of which, up until that point, I didn’t even know I was a part. The film was Afro-Punk, directed by James Spooner, and it touches on not only the musicality of black fronted punk and hardcore bands like Bad Brains and many others, but also the very real racial aspect of being black in the punk rock scene. While no one can really dictate what is or is not black (I’ve actually had other black people tell me I wasn’t black enough, go figure. I was born and raised in Africa, folks!), the film was nevertheless profound.

The line-up for the night consisted of a large range of musical talent starting with English DJ Mark Ronson, English alternative by Dan Black, heavy rock by Delilah featuring Jamie Burke and hip hop electronica fusion by Theophilus London with DJ Treats.

When a friend offered me a ticket to the Pixies sold out show at Hammerstein Ballroom last Tuesday, I couldn’t resist. Even though I’m the most casual of Pixies fans, being able to identify two, maybe three songs at the most, I figured seeing them perform their 1989 masterpiece Doolittle in its entirety would be the perfect introduction. I couldn’t have been more right.

GLOBAL PLAYLIST – Donkeyboy

When describing this next group I have the tendency to call them the “Norwegian Black Eyed Peas”. It’s not because Donkeyboy is known for infectious dance tracks with hip-hop flair, but because, like BEP, the band has seriously dominated the charts this year in their native country. Donkeyboy released its debut single, Ambitions, this summer and it clung to the #1 spot on the Norwegian charts for a record 12 weeks, only to be usurped by the band’s sophomore single Sometimes. Clearly, to say that they are popular in their homeland would be a gross understatement.
