Mano Sneaks

If you’ve been checking out any music publication lately then you’ve probably noticed the string of artists they are lauding as “the next big thing”. Good or bad it must be an honor for any artist to be featured and it’s also a great way to freshen up on whatever you’re spinning. I wrote about Mano after I stumbled onto his music through a friend; everyone’s either DJ’ing or remixing these days and some have proven to go above and beyond. Others are just hopping on the band wagon and trying to keep up with the pack. URB magazine recently released its “Next 100” and Mano is one of those featured; his tracks had a je ne c’est qu about them. He was gathering inspiration from genres as far apart as juke, house, and rap music to concoct his signature style. I was fortunate enough to be able to catch up with him while he was on tour with MIA in Mexico. He’s a genuine guy and at 23 he is blazing his own trail to stardom while keeping his wits about him and staying what appears to be quite humble.

E-Readers a flop?

About 6 months ago most people probably saw ads for Sony or Amazon’s new e-readers. However, the-readers are not a new hustle, they’ve just never really caught on. Maybe it’s the fact they range from 300 to 400 dollars which, in the books they compact into their digital interface, could buy the equivalent of hundreds of books. I enjoy the feeling of owning a book; from their feel to that brand new fresh book smell. The reason I wrote this is because I witnessed one in use on the train. A woman was reading a “traditional” book while a gentleman adjacent to her was enjoying the luxuries of his Amazon Kindle. Thousands of dollars have been spent on the e-readers respective ad campaigns the result is this one man:

If this doesn’t make you realize that Barak is the right man running for president nothing will. This video makes me proud to be an African American living, breathing and being able to do what empowers me to get where I want to go in the United States. We’re existing in such a great time in history as technology, culture, and the future are giving us so much to look forward to (whether it be both good and bad) and we need to wake up! We are a global community and we need to work towards living on this Earth as one people for a common good. I have never viewed people as black or white but as friends and family; I can only hope that we all try to lift each other up every day…

“My Quick Smells Like French Toast”

This is why Wieden + Kennedyare a powerhouse of an ad agency. This is the most recent 30 second spot for Nike’s new “SPARQ Training” program that was anounced this week. Everything from the copy to the attitude that the athletes execute sells, “Hey, maybe I should go out and pick up some Nike gear and get my game better”. The allure of the trash talking is what really made me want to further investigate what the heck I was watching. Lines like, “your agility owes my agility two bucks” and “my speed is already watching the next commercial” are genius. Wieden + Kennedy has been working with Nike for years on its branding and identity campaigns and has, ever so often, shined in delivering a stunning message for Nike. From designing their iconic swoosh logo to orchestrating their now multi-tear ad campaigns that go from the tradational to the viral and interactive. Here’s Nike’s official press lease on “SPARQ”.

The Hundreds

Dudes and dudettes The Hundreds franchise is growing and the next stop is San Francisco. If you are unfamiliar with The Hundreds then increase your knowledge: check out their blog and shop so you can get up to speed. Thursday, March 20th, at 11am is the grand opening of their new store which will be located at 585 Post St in San Francisco. There will be a lot of exclusive gear produced solely for the opening of the new store here in the bay. They, along with HUF, are currently remodeling and building up their already established brands here in SF. Conrad (The Fizix) attracted me to The Hundreds when I was in San Diego last year but unfortunatleythey only had a store front in LA at the time and I wasn’t able to scope it out. I’m excited to check out the store and will post about the event, stay tuned!
