Muxtape, not a misnomer, is a site that has been making the rounds rather quickly on the ‘ole interweb. Simple premise: you can create a mixtape that has it’s own unique URL that can be shared with friends and played anywhere. Here’s my mixtape, go on and try it out.

Rickey Kim – He Knows What’s Next

While searching for a Saul Williams interview a couple of years ago I stumbled upon a site called Evil Monito. I had no idea what it was at the time; After reading the interview and going through the archives I found several interesting essays ranging from identity politics to capitalist consumption. As I browsed through the site some more I discovered that Ricky Kim was the man behind Evil Monito. As founder, Kim and his crew critique and dissect pop culture. Not only was it one of the most in depth articles I’ve ever read about Saul Williams but it tackled profound questions raised about his work. Fast forward 3 years later and the Evil Monito title includes online magazine and catalyst for Ricky Kim as well as marketing and PR firm based in Echo Park, CA. Kim also collaborates with such brands as Kangol, CreativeRecreation, and Logan Hicks. According to Mr.Kim, Evil Monito provides a behind the scences look at his hustle of the two worlds. Gitamba conducted an interview with Mr. Kim via email a couple weeks ago, I think its pretty interesting, check it out.

They Came by The Hundreds!

The Hundreds Grand Opening

They waited up to 4 hours for The Hundreds‘ new store in San Francisco on Post St. The turnout exemplified the dedicated support that the Los Angeles brand has built over the last few years. Patrons from all over the bay area lined up despite the slow moving procession and late opening. Passersby were more than intrigued as to what was going on as the crowd took up most of the sidewalk. The store had limited edition collaborative apparel from notable names such as Bennie Gold and Hieroglyphics. The interior of the store sports a high concept cave-feel that, Bobby revealed, was inspired by films like Lost Boys, Pirates of the Caribbean, Captain Hook and Peter Pan. Unfortunately cameras were not allowed inside the store, but I would highly recommend checking out the store even if you aren’t into street wear. Here are some photos from the event. (For future reference-please ASK to use our photos)

Mega Huf/Blackscale

After the hoopla over at The Hundreds store Alicia and I headed over HUF to check out how the guys there were doing. As usual the selection of gear from HUF was up to par (I still don’t know which pair of sneakers I want to pick up). Mega (Blackscale/HUF) was grindin’ as usual as he’s been very busy traveling between San Francisco and LA as HUF prepares to open up a new store. The new store will be opening in April (more details will follow). Mega’s Blackscale line has been flying off the shelves but I was lucky enough to pick up a shirt from the new line which has imagery inspired by masonic symbols. HUF as a whole is also undergoing changes as they’ve updated their site and stopped use of the old etch a sketch logo for a cleaner appearance.

Million Dollar Mano – ” A Connoisseurs ‘Connoisseur’ “

Mano Sneaks

If you’ve been checking out any music publication lately then you’ve probably noticed the string of artists they are lauding as “the next big thing”. Good or bad it must be an honor for any artist to be featured and it’s also a great way to freshen up on whatever you’re spinning. I wrote about Mano after I stumbled onto his music through a friend; everyone’s either DJ’ing or remixing these days and some have proven to go above and beyond. Others are just hopping on the band wagon and trying to keep up with the pack. URB magazine recently released its “Next 100” and Mano is one of those featured; his tracks had a je ne c’est qu about them. He was gathering inspiration from genres as far apart as juke, house, and rap music to concoct his signature style. I was fortunate enough to be able to catch up with him while he was on tour with MIA in Mexico. He’s a genuine guy and at 23 he is blazing his own trail to stardom while keeping his wits about him and staying what appears to be quite humble.

E-Readers a flop?

ereaders

About 6 months ago most people probably saw ads for Sony or Amazon’s new e-readers. However, the-readers are not a new hustle, they’ve just never really caught on. Maybe it’s the fact they range from 300 to 400 dollars which, in the books they compact into their digital interface, could buy the equivalent of hundreds of books. I enjoy the feeling of owning a book; from their feel to that brand new fresh book smell. The reason I wrote this is because I witnessed one in use on the train. A woman was reading a “traditional” book while a gentleman adjacent to her was enjoying the luxuries of his Amazon Kindle. Thousands of dollars have been spent on the e-readers respective ad campaigns the result is this one man:
