Dee and Ricky

These two guys seem to be popping up more and more in my daily reading. I first caught sight of them when I was doing a stop over at the Sartorialist blog to get my style game up. I saw these peculiar, yet perfectly positioned, Lego jewelery accessories they were both sporting. On further investigation it turns out that the pieces were designed by these two brothers in New York. The Lego inspired pieces have traveled  far and wide from Marc Jacobs Fashion shows to Kanye West. I later realised that our good friend YG had run into them while out doing the social hustle in NY. These guys are on a serious grind as they are also 2/3rd of Jackson Swinton (a band that has been seen mingling with Busy P, Uffie and other various Ed Banger Records roster). Now the real question you should be asking is, when are we going to see a Dee & Ricky x The Retrospective collaboration?

MTV ENGINE ROOM

So I’m interested to see how MTV decreases the value of yet another creative outlet. I mentioned earlier that MTV is aging; it has lost touch with being the pinnacle of cool and reached an identity crisis by trying to regain the “shine” of it’s youth. I don’t remember how I ran into this, but they are currently developing a new show, “Engine Room,” and asking for entries. The concept, which I think borrows heavily from the legit design battle “Cut & Paste,” pits designers from varying mediums against each other in what, I hope, isn’t stupid. I mean I love design battles; I’ve been to Cut and Paste (it’s awesome), and it’s held and run by fantastic designers. MTV is getting their hands on the concept and doing lord knows what to it- this only spells D I S A S T E R in my book. We will just have to wait and see as Suchin Pak (Pretty much 1 of the 5 people I actually respect at MTV) hosts the show this fall.

FN MTV

FN MTV

At almost 30, MTV is no longer the new, fresh-faced kid on the block that it used to be back in the 80’s. They struggled to bring what was, at the time, underground movements to the heart, eyes and minds of young adults- they brought hip hop to suburban kids in Kansas for Christ’s sake! It was once regarded as the industry standard to plug an artist- if MTV put it’s stamp of approval on it, well, it had to be cool.

BBC Ice Cream Season 7

Just when I thought I couldn’t have any more N.E.R.D in my life, turns out that front man Pharrell and BAPE mastermind NIGO just released the look book for season 7 of the Billionaire Boys Club line. I wasn’t always a fan of BBC, but this season has a distinct blend of couture and streetwear that could easily find it’s way into my closet. I especially dug the schoolboy blazers Nigo rocks (the navy blue is to die for). As for the camo one, well I can’t see myself in battle needing to look good…or do I?

N.E.R.D – Seeing Sounds

Seeing Sounds NERD

The roommates and I have been listing to this record on repeat since we got an early release copy earlier this month. Seeing Sounds just took me by surprise; maybe it’s because I feel like I’m experiencing a different band altogether on this record. From crooning jazz hits like “Sooner or Later” or club bangers like “Everyone Nose,” this record feels like it has it all. GO BUY THIS RECORD, put more money in Pharell’s already lavishly-styled wallet.

Faces in the Crowd – Real Art Ways Creative Cocktail

real art ways creative cocktail

Yet another saving grace of living in downtown Hartford has to be Real  Art Ways. It has fought tooth and nail to bring art and culture to the hum drum of Hartford. Located pretty much in my back yard, it plays monthly to the “Creative Cocktail” party. New works are introduced at this festive gathering of local town socialites, DJ’s and even visual performers. Through word of mouth (thanks to Phoebe) I was invited out to shoot. I missed this event ever so often, due to my schedule, but I’m glad I made it out and will most certainly be at the next…
