When you grow up with the members of Daft Punk and cavort around Hollywood with directorial royalty like Sophia Coppola, it’s almost a guarantee that every time we see you you’ll be doing something cool. Phoenix, my favorite Parisians, just happen to fit the aforementioned bill. Check out the video for their latest single, “Lisztomania,” to see just what untouchable awesome looks like when raised to nth power.

In an effort to foster relationships and create dialogues with the creative forces that inspire us, “We Are Each Other” is an on-going series that spotlights designers in various design disciplines. These in-depth interviews and essays showcase our belief that we are all extensions of a larger artistic community, inspiring and motivating each other to new heights of imagination and innovation.

Tapping technology for growth and inspiration is something we do every day at The Retrospective. Technology connects us with communities hundreds of thousands of miles away, right around the corner, and even out in Minneapolis—which is where we found interactive and typographic designer Tim Drabandt. Tim’s own search to grow and learn through the web resonated with us, so we did a little exploring, and decided we just had to feature his work. We’re humbled at having been gifted with amazing work from all of our “We Are Each Other” designers, and Tim is no exception.

Cut Off Your Hands – Popscene, San Francisco, CA

A great record is like having a crush on a girl: the first date can make or break the affair. When I first heard the new LP, You and I, from Cut Off Your Hands, I got all pinkygoo, weak in the knees. Would this infatuation be fleeting, or would we be picking out curtains together at IKEA? With Noise Pop, SXSW, and every other summer festival shifting into high gear for the months ahead, I was graced with the chance to catch the New Zealand four-piece at the local indie circuit, Popscene, in San Francisco.

One peek at Chris Piascik‘s wildly imaginative work and you’ll be wondering what’s going on inside this illustrators head. Rooted in illustration and a love for hand drawn typography, Chris’ work features enigmatic characters, personal introspection, and a hint of humor that teeters on genius. Aside from being a designer living in Boston he and our last WAEO designer, Vaughn Fender, run an online apparel shop, Print Brigade.

The Brooklyn Circus SF x Pro-Keds

The Brooklyn Circus‘ attention to detail and their fierce love of their brand, is what keeps me coming back. It had been a while since my last visit to their shop on Fillmore, and when I saw they had landed the coveted Pro-Keds account (only two other shops in the Bay Area carry them) I had to go see what else lay under the big top.
