Oh I Think They Like Me- Girl Talk in CT

May 2nd, 2008 by

Albeit a week later, the mere mention Girl Talk’s music still drives me into a barrage of excited banter. Friends have had to deal with my hyper antics since last Friday when ultimate mashup DJ, Girl Talk, headlined a show at Toads Place in New Haven, CT.

Packed in like sardines at the sold out show, we were slowly inched into a dance frenzy as openers Passion Pit mixed their own brand of lilting vocals and hip shaking electro pop the likes of which Hot Chip would be proud. Don’t make the mistake of categorizing them as some “sub-sub-genre” new wave revival. Passion Pit states on their myspace, “So like, get it out of your mind that this is yet another avant-retro scumbag project…” Although slightly avant garde in my opinion, Passion Pit brings it on with their own brand of delicious body-movin’ beats that will surely earn them a place among the big boys. Anyway, back to the subject at hand…

It was time for Girl Talk to hit the stage and I’ll tell you, the anticipation was killing me. Then the lap top opened and the man of the hour appeared. Although a tad tipsy and a little dizzy in my clop hoppers, the screams and hoots that rose from my lungs were joined by a hyped up crowd awaiting to tear up the floor.

With an obnoxious smile plastered on my face I glanced down at my overpriced black suede boots and gasped in horror as recollections of past Girl Talk performances played out. I would have to give in to the havoc and let my shoes take the beating while my body uncontrollably jumped and bounced to Girl Talk’s intricately tailored mixes.

I’ll be the first to admit, Girl Talk puts on an incredible show. He pulls on your heartstrings with a HUGE dose of nostalgia by expertly combining early nineties top 40 hits with today’s popular music. The first time I witnessed his genius was at college, I knew nothing about him and yet I found my self falling over the masses just to get a closer look. That night I desperately wanted to go on stage with the some 50 people dancing along with Girl Talk but alas, my boots did not hold up 🙁

If you ever get a chance to see Girl Talk live, bring your best game face (and a pair of durable shoes).
