Theophilus London – This Charming Tour

Theophilus London kicked off “This Charming Tour” in Allston, MA. last Thursday at one of Boston’s more notorious locations for local undergrads. The volume of crowd was low, but morale was high. How high? As soon as Theophilus stepped on stage I almost got tackled by an overly excited fan with big X’s on the back of her hands. Some of the kids knew the lyrics, some didn’t, but everyone was swaying to left and to the right in step with the svelte Theophilus throughout the entire set.

He started off the show with “Grey X Sage” which caught the crowd’s attention and then kept them captivated with a new and improved  version of Whitney Houston’s “Always Love You”, complete with Baltimore bass. The highlight of the show (for me, anyway) was an unexpected shout out to The Retrospective (Thanks, homie!).  The show ended with a heartfelt performance of “Take Your Life” which Theophilus dedicated to a friend.  A crowd of 50, or 500 wouldn’t have mattered in Allston that night, it seemed as if we all had “a moment” with Theophilus.  As he left the stage, he also left the small crowd wanting more, but as is always the case– good things come to an end.

I had the opportunity to catch up with Theophilus and Watts after the show and chit chat with them about the upcoming shows.  The two were (not suprisingly) charming, and I will very much be looking forward to catching them March 13th in San Francisco.
