In an effort to foster relationships and create dialogues with the creative forces that inspire us, “We Are Each Other” is an on-going series that spotlights designers in various design disciplines. These in-depth interviews and essays showcase our belief that we are all extensions of a larger artistic community, inspiring and motivating each other to new heights of imagination and innovation.

We Are Each Other: Justin Smith

As Farewell to Arms’ former frontman, audience members would witness the frenetic Justin Smith swing, throw, and scream into the microphone in one frantic moment, then drop into a dead calm the next. Its no wonder why his design work reflects his explosive personality. Today, Justin slings type around like a gunfighter in the Wild West.

Jelsen Jargon

Jelsen Innocent (aka Jelsen Jargon) is a Brooklyn-based graphic artist whose work is playful, and could even be described as visually compelling. I first discovered Jelsen’s work purely by accident. What really drew me in is that, he almost exclusively hand draws custom typefaces for his projects. Crafted with a loving subtle detail. I decided to shoot him an email and we met up for a chat and lunch in Manhattan. We had interesting conversation about his work, inspiration and our mutual love of type. Here is a quick Q & A and some pieces of his work.

Boston Wine Expo 2009

Boston public transportation is my least favorite way to travel but surprisingly it was not bad in getting us to our destination. Alicia and I decided on the Wine Expo on a whim. The walk from the T to the World Trade Center and the Seaport Hotel was typical New England–cold, but thankfully short. Past security and through roped-in pathways we were lead to the main entrance of the expo hall. Ticket prices were a bit high, $85-105 a piece, so we expected a certain appearance to the event. While there was nothing grandiose about the exhibit hall, you certainly did not feel like cattle being herded and stored. As we walked down the last set of stairs into the hall, complimentary wine glasses were available. There were around 1000 booths of food, advertisements, and—of course—wine.

This Charming Mixtape Cover

Good news travels fast on the interweb. This week, the powers that be dropped Theophilus London‘s “This Charming Mixtape”  on my desk. I heard his name dropped  before by the various crews he rolls with such as, A.L.I.E.N and GFC, but I never had a proper introduction to his music. Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, Theophilus (Yes, that’s his REAL name) is an artist you should be on the look out for.
