I think this lady is a real gem. A talented musician of Japanese-Swedish heritage, 28-year-old Maia Hirasawa hails from the seaside city of Gothenburg. Maia first got attention in her native Sweden when she performed accompanying vocals for the indie pop band, Hello Saferide. Last fall I had the pleasure of seeing the band perform here in Washington at the Swedish embassy’s cultural house, which is where I had my first brush with Maia.
The chanteuse completed her debut album in 2007 and has just released her sophomore effort, “GBG vs STHLM” (Gothenburg vs. Stockholm) in which she beautifully incorporates sweeping string ensembles with twee pop. Her passionate piano playing is evident in the album’s first single, “South Again,” and is accompanied by top-notch lyrical content that paints pictures of quirky yet relatable scenarios such as nursing a hangover with the one you love, a la the charming, “I Will Sing For You.” As yet there’s been no date set for the album’s North American release, but you can find some of Maia’s previous work on iTunes. I hope that U.S. audiences get the chance to experience this artist, but ‘til she makes it stateside, check out some of her work:
