For my 21st birthday, some friends and I trekked over to the House of Sweden located between the Foggy Bottom and Georgetown sections of Washington, DC. The reason was that indie pop performers Firefox AK and Hello Saferide were performing (a free show). The House of Sweden, which is sort of the cultural arm of the Swedish Embassy, is becoming quite the talk of Washington due in part to the various cultural exhibitions that are displayed and take place there.
Firefox AK is Andrea Kellerman, a woman of 5’5 whose band infuses acoustic guitar with electronic beats. Hello Saferide is fronted by Annika Norlin, a journalist/singer-songwriter based out of Stockholm. When she and her band are not singing in English, they’re doing so in their native tongue under the name Säkert! Hello Saferide has a knack for weaving funny and pensive narratives that leaves the audience both laughing and longing for some sort of nostalgia. I was lucky enough to meet them after the show and have a chat. Nice guys! Annika did a Swedish accordion cover of fellow Swede Robyn’s, With Every Heartbeat (För varje hjärtslag), earlier this year. Check out their sophomore album More Modern Short Stories from Hello Saferide, which is available via iTunes.
